We can’t think of anybody more perfect to be our Skye Melody Ambassador than Selina McCloskey (SM). Selina overcame relentless school bullying and low self esteem to not only excel in academics and sport, but to also be crowned Miss International Australia in 2024. Selina uses her platform to advocate for women and gender equality, volunteering with one of our personal favourite charities, Dress for Success. We sat down with Selina to discuss what it means to be a leader and the importance of courage when it comes to chasing your goals.
To start, can you tell us what you’re currently focused on in your life and work right now?
SM: I feel like the last couple of months and years have been crazy; from being crowned Miss International Australia, to getting my first job in HR, to being the face of the Newcastle Racecourse. For now, I’m choosing to slow down, take a moment to reflect, and embrace this new chapter, starting with a trip to New Zealand, followed by Spain.
How would you describe this season of your life in a few words?
SM: I’d describe this season as reflective and grounded in inner growth. I’m taking the time to understand what truly drives and inspires me.

Confidence & Personal Growth
Confidence often evolves over time — how has yours changed as you’ve grown personally and professionally?
SM: My confidence has definitely had to evolve over time, especially as Miss International Australia, knowing younger generations may look up to me as a role model. It’s shifted from simply believing in myself to also carrying a sense of responsibility.
I’ve learned that true confidence isn’t about being the loudest voice in the room, but about trusting your abilities, knowing your values, and feeling secure in who you are, even when no one is watching. – Selina McCloskey
What do you think truly builds confidence from the inside out?
SM: I believe confidence is nurtured by alignment. When your actions match your values and you’re living in a way that feels authentic, confidence feels natural rather than forced. It becomes something steady and internal, rather than something you have to perform.
Have there been moments in your journey where self-belief didn’t come easily? How did you move through that?
SM: Yes, absolutely. I was heavily bullied throughout school and had pretty low self esteem. Moving through that wasn’t instant, it took time, support and the conscious decision to stop allowing other people’s opinions define me. I began by focusing on what I could control, such as my mindset and the people who I surrounded myself with. I strongly believe that the people you surround yourself with shape the person you become.

Wellbeing & mindset
What does wellbeing mean to you today?
SM: To me, wellbeing today goes far beyond the physical side of things. It’s about mental clarity, emotional balance and feeling aligned with who I am and what I value. Wellbeing focuses on nurturing relationships that uplift me, and carving out time for reflection and growth.
Are there any simple daily habits or rituals that help you stay grounded, focused or energised?
SM: One habit I like to do daily is grounding myself in prayer. I take a few quiet moments each day to help centre my thoughts, find clarity and connect to something bigger than myself.
How do you take care of your mindset when life feels busy or demanding?
SM: When life gets busy or demanding, I make it a priority to pause and recalibrate. Amid the hustle and bustle of work and daily commitments, it’s so important to carve out time each day for things that bring you joy and recharge your energy. Whether it’s a quiet moment of reflection, a walk outdoors, or connecting with loved ones, these small rituals help me stay balanced, maintain perspective, and approach each day with a clearer, calmer mindset.

Goals & dreams
When you look back at what you’ve achieved so far, do you feel it happened by careful intentional planning, courage in the moment, or a mix of both?
SM: Looking back, I’d definitely say it has been a mix of both. Intentional planning has helped me set goals and create a path forward, but courage in the direction has been just as important. I have had to step up and say yes to opportunities even when I wasn’t sure what the outcome would be. I’ve learned that planning often lays the foundation, but growth often occurs when you trust yourself enough to take that leap into the unknown. Most importantly, it’s been the faith and belief in my goal, knowing that I am exactly where I’m meant to be. That unwavering trust in my path has been the driving force behind everything.
What dreams or aspirations are you currently holding space for?
SM: I’ve always had dreams and aspirations — as humans, we’re constantly reaching for the next big thing. Right now, I’m enjoying some time for relaxation and reflection. In the future, I would love the opportunity to win the Melbourne Cup Fashions on the Field. Fashion has always been a true passion of mine, and I would love to showcase it on a larger, more celebrated stage.

Influence
Have there been mentors, role models or experiences that have shaped the woman you are today?
SM: I feel incredibly fortunate to have grown up in such a supportive family that has always encouraged me to pursue my dreams. Throughout school, I was involved in extracurricular activities almost every day whether it was piano lessons, learning Mandarin, drama, nippers, ballet, tennis, or basketball. My parents consistently provided me with every opportunity to succeed and supported me in every endeavour.
Now, it is my mission to give back to them. Their sacrifices and dedication motivate me to work hard and show the seeds of their hard work.
What advice would you give to women who admire your journey but feel unsure about taking their next step?
SM: If anyone feels unsure about taking their next step, I always think of Wayne Gretzky’s quote: “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” It’s a reminder that opportunities only become possibilities when we have the courage to try. I encourage everyone to take that leap of faith into the unknown and embrace every opportunity that comes their way. Growth and confidence are built through action, even when it feels intimidating. It is important to remember that every step, big or small, moves you closer to your goals.

Miss International journey
What inspired you to step into the Miss International journey?
SM: I’ve always dreamed of being in a position that the younger generations can look up to and relate to. The Miss International pageant was the perfect opportunity to step into this goal while also having my voice heard at the same time. As someone who has volunteered for a number of years, in particular with Dress For Success, I was given the opportunity to raise awareness about women empowerment and encourage women to take up space.
Was there fear involved — and if so, how did you work with it rather than against it?
SM: Absolutely!! Being my first pageant, putting myself out there for the world to see and critique brought a lot of fear of the unknown. It challenged me in ways I had never experienced and truly pushed me outside of my comfort zone. But in facing that fear, I discovered a new level of resilience, self-belief, and courage.
I think the way I worked with it rather than against it was by letting go of things and placing them in God’s hands. By allowing Him to carry some of these stressors, I was able to focus on giving my best, stay present in the moment, and trust that everything would unfold as it was meant to.
What did that experience teach you about yourself?
ISM: think the Miss International journey taught me that we are far more capable and resilient than we often give ourselves credit for. It showed me that stepping into the unknown, facing challenges, and embracing vulnerability can reveal strengths I didn’t know I had. Most importantly, it reminded me that confidence and growth come from trusting yourself, leaning on your support system, and staying true to your purpose, no matter how daunting the path may seem.
